A giant angel will illuminate the Plaza de Colón, in Madrid, this Christmas. It will measure 18 meters high and will be made up of more than 36,000 LED lights. Your installation has already begun. It did so in the early hours of Monday to Tuesday and will continue for several more days. The figure, which has been baptized by the City Council as “Angel of Madrid”, will replace the Nativity scene that was in that same place the last two Christmases and which will now be moved in front of the Metrópolis building, at the confluence of Gran Vía with Calle of Alcalá.
This year’s Christmas lighting will reach more than 230 locations in the 21 districts of the capital. Among the new features it will have are the lights designed by first and second grade children who participated in the school drawing contest held in March by the Madrid City Council. They can be seen around the Plaza Mayor. Specifically, on Ciudad Rodrigo, Toledo, Siete de Julio, Felipe III, Gerona and Sal streets.
Other novelties will be the 18-meter-long star at the confluence of Rea Bermudez with the Plaza de Cristo Rey and the 37-meter-high fir tree at Puerta del Sol. The classics remain. They are the great Christmas ball in the Plaza de España or the luminous Menina on Paseo del Prado. In general terms, on the streets of Madrid there will be 7,100 chains, 121 cherry trees and a dozen large illuminated fir trees, among other reasons.
The lighting of the Christmas lights will be on November 28 at Puerta del Sol. This year, the person in charge of turning on the lights will be the national men’s soccer coach, Luis de la Fuente, who will do so accompanied by the mayor of Madrid, José Luís Martínez-Almeida.
